Matt Furey shifted to Edinborough University, Pennsylvania in 1984 and subsequently won the NCAA II national title at 167-pounds, defeating two-time California state champion, Howard Lawson, in the finals. His coach was Mike DeAnna and Bruce Baumgartner, two-times Olympic Gold Medalist. In 1987, Furey took to training high school wrestlers. He was sharp enough to spot the need for a total physical and mental training for professional wrestling. In 1996, he learned grappling from Dr. Daniel Weng, a national champion from . He was the first American to win the World Kung Fu Shuai-Chiao tournament in in 1997. Furey has learned other forms of grappling such as boke and trained many champion wrestlers of the world.
Matt Furey has also authored, Combat Conditioning: Functional Exercises for Fitness & Combat Sports and How To Achieve What You Want Without Positive Thinking. He teaches his fitness regime through videotapes titled Combat Training, Mongolian Grappling Secrets Revealed, How To Hook A Heavyweight Without Flopping To The Guard, The Lost Art Of Pinning and The Lost Art Of Countering Pin Holds. He publishes a monthly newsletter on fitness and has been featured in various popular martial arts magazines.
In the instructional videotape, Matt Furey explains how to do Hindu squats, pushups, bridges, bear crawls, sit-ups, pull-ups and jump rope. He has personally demonstrated the exercises. The tape is peppered with motivational talk between the sequences.
However, the recording quality is poor for the exorbitant cost of the tape. Matt Furey should include a voice-over explaining stepwise how do conduct the exercises, with the help of an assistant, rather than personally demonstrating on tape. He should incorporate helpful tips on structuring a fitness regimen as well as demonstrate the practical applications of the martial arts. Overall, the fitness program is a good investment for those looking out for a variety in their workout.
