Dale Carnegie is one of the best-known names in management. He was born in Maryville, Missouri on November 24, 1888. He was born into sheer poverty but he went on to become a public figure of respect with his books and courses on self-improvement. He is the author of several famous books like How to Win Friends and Influence People and a biography of Abraham Lincoln called Lincoln the Unknown.
Dale Carnegie emphasized the important of responsibility assumption and stressed on public speaking and interpersonal skills. Born into a poor farmer’s family, Dale Carnegie worked hard from the beginning. He started out his career as a salesperson and was successful enough to make his sales territory the most productive in the country for the firm. Dale Carnegie believed that eighty five percent of the earning potential comes from interpersonal and leadership skills. This is reflected in his courses that are today taught worldwide by a network of franchises.
The course is a Self-Improvement Program conducted using standardized curriculums. College graduates who are experienced managers teach the course. The classes are conducted in the evenings for three hours each. The course spans over 12 sessions, once per week. Typically the class size for each course is about 10-30 attendees. A good part of the students’ time is making presentations to each other. Some critics of the course find these presentations verbose. Another school of criticism thinks that come practices taught by the course are manipulative and unfair.
Dale Carnegie’s book How to Win Friends and Influence People helped many people with influencing people in their everyday lives and build better relationships. The book was a true best-seller that sold over 15 million copies. His other book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living is a practical and inspiring handbook on conquering fears. Dale Carnegie’s biography of Lincoln is an insightful book about lesser-known events in Lincoln’s life.
