OnlyCritiques.com Review:
The African country of is popular these days for all the wrong reasons. It has been the site for some of the largest scams in the past ten years. Some ‘companies’ or individuals are swindling people all over the world not only off their money but also off their physical security.
These scams usually work over the Internet through e-mail letters. The subject of these letters varies, but the crux is the same: offering a share in a percentage of millions of dollars that the author of the e-mail is trying to transfer illegally out of Nigeria. When somebody responds he is asked to open an account with balance of at least $10,000 to throw off any suspicion that the authorities might have, and it is made to look like a regular business deal. The scammer then runs away with the money, often with involvement of bank officials. In other cases, some scammers ask for the bank account number of the respondents, and withdraw money from their accounts.
This scam is known as the Nigerian Advance Fee Scheme (also known internationally as 4-1-9 fraud after the section of the Nigerian penal code which addresses fraud schemes). They work well because the victims are deluded very well into believing in the legitimacy of the scheme by forged or false documents bearing apparently official Nigerian government letterhead, seals, as well as false letters of credit, payment schedules and bank drafts. The scam artist may even establish the credibility of his contacts, and thereby his influence, by arranging a meeting between the victim and "government officials" in real or fake government offices.
Once involved, suspecting victims are threatened to keep these affairs silent and participate willingly. In June of 1995, an American was murdered in Lagos, Nigeria, while pursuing a 4-1-9 scam, and many other foreign nationals have even gone missing.
The reason that such scams succeed is greed. In the hope of making more money fast, people are ending up losing much more in the bargain. The worst part is that the few unscrupulous ones are tainting the reputation of good Nigerians and good Nigerian businesses. It is adversely affecting business deals, investments and the market in Nigeria.
There is speculation that some government or banking industry might even be involved. Experts, therefore, recommend doing business only with those companies that are well known and have a long-standing reputation.
