OnlyCritiques.com Review:
Maxwell Maltz, author of best-selling book Psycho-Cybernetics remains a guide for several self-help gurus. His emphasis has been on asking his patients to visualize their goals to cure them of their insecurities and unhappiness. Though he started out as a cosmetic face surgeon, it did not take him long to realize that giving new faces to his patients did not really translate to fulfilling lives. This was because of scarred beliefs that affected their take on life. This stems from experiences of a person’s failures and successes and his or her idea of how others see him or her. This founded his self-image psychology-the idea that all our action follows from our view of ourselves. Self-image is formed according to what psychological input it receives. The best part of this entity is that it is pliable and can be changed. So positive thinking would be of no use if restricted to external circumstances only. This is the view he voices in “New Faces, New Futures”.
Cybernetics refers to the system of control in machines. It derives from the Greek word that means “steersman”. Cybernetics was founded by the mathematician Norbert Weiner of America. Maltz applied the same principle to humans but was far from reducing men to machines. In fact, artificial intelligence and cognitive science are outgrowths of cybernetics. Maltz realized that achievement was a matter of choice. The emphasis was on what the target was rather than how to achieve it. It provided a scientific basis for the success rate of a person. This groundbreaking discovery made him one of the most sought after motivational speaker in the 1960’s and 70’s.
He published several other works like The Magic Powers of the Self Image, Five Minutes to Happiness apart from three novels. However, at age of 61 years, the apotheosis of the vibrant career arrived in the form of Psycho-Cybernetics. It followed the heels of extensive research; counseling hundreds of patients, study in various fields and trial of his “success conditioning techniques” on a wide cross-section of the population. The yellow badge on the paperback version of the book saying, “Over 5,000,000 copies sold” speaks volumes. It is estimated that all over the world sales of the several translations of the book apart from the edition numbers to 25 million.
The legacy of Maltz lives on in the form of the Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation, Inc. that makes available all his works. A nonprofit organization, it owns the copyrights and intellectual property rights to all his works. Dr. Maltz’s wife, who was also been his business partner, Anne Maltz started work with Mr. Dan Kennedy in 1988 to promote her husband’s work. Together they came out with home study courses like Zero Resistance Living. In 1995, Mr. Kennedy took over as Chairman of Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation Inc and was replaced by Matt Furey in 2005.
