An angel investor or a business angel is a wealthy individual who provides capital, experience and business skills for young businesses, and usually in exchange for ownership equity. The investments made are informal, and angel investors often organize themselves into angel groups or angel networks to share research and pool their own investment capital. 

These investors are called angels because it is perceived that they save loss-making firms with both finance and expertise when no one else will. An unofficial figure states that about thousands of US companies received angel funding in 2005, and on an average, each raised about $500,000. High-tech companies secured the maximum funding, and the single biggest category within high tech was software.
